We interview Alexis of Soulful Healing about what exactly meditation is and how it can be incorporated into a fuss-free daily routine

Kelly: You hear a lot about mindfulness this and mindfulness that, and you should be more mindful, and so on. But what, exactly, is mindfulness? Could you please give us a definition?

Alexis: For me, there is no set definition to the word mindfulness. I'm sure if we look it up in the dictionary there will be a definition. However, I believe it is about staying present and embracing the power of ones true authentic and highest self. Aspiring to live each day in our highest and most conscious timeline. Embodying love in all that we do.

Kelly: What does it mean to be mindful, in general?

Alexis: Having an understanding of oneself, self-awareness for others and the impact that one can have on the other. Basically, doing all things with love.

Kelly: How did you become a meditation practitioner and why sound baths in particular?

Alexis: I have always been spiritual but I believe I had a spiritual awakening in 2019. I was in a very dark place and was struggling to see the light but then I started to meditate more and began to find the light again. I then wanted to help others overcome depression and trained to become a Reiki Practitioner Level 1 & 2 and upon qualifying, the Reiki Master told me my life was going to change. I had no idea what to expect but since that day, everything has fallen into place. I was recommended by a friend to train in Sound Healing because she thought I would be good at it, so I did and on the second day of training, I was in love with the practice. The teacher told me I was a natural and that Sound Healing is my calling and I can honestly say, I believe she was right. I have been in love with Sound since being a qualified sound therapist.

Kelly: What have you gained personally from meditation?

Alexis: Peace of mind, clarity and understanding that darkness can not outshine the light. When we close our eyes to meditate and quieten the mind, if we feel and look deeper into our third eye we begin to see light, even with our eyes closed.

Kelly: Does mindfulness mean sitting crossed-legged in stillness and silence?

Alexis: Not at all, mindfulness can be done at any point in our day, if it can be as simple as coming back to ourselves and being present.

Kelly: It's been said that meditation means being present in the moment, so, for example, if I am in the zone whilst training at the gym, is that practising mindfulness?

Alexis: Yes, I would agree. Mindfulness means different things to each person, but fundamentally it's about being in a frame of mind where you feel at peace and at your most present.

Kelly: Even if it is a subconscious act?

Alexis: Agreed. As we practice mindfulness it naturally becomes a habit.

Kelly: What are the different types of mindfulness practices?

Alexis: Take a deep inhale and exhale, connecting the mind to the breath. Being present in the moment, where you can reflect on actions or a situation as if you are outside of your body. Living each day and wanting the best for yourself and everyone around you. Striving to be the best person.

Kelly: How does mindfulness affect your state of mind, generally speaking?

Alexis: We become at peace. I have been speaking a lot about happiness lately as that’s what lots of people aspire to be but I believe we should strive to be at peace. Once we practice mindfulness, we understand that circumstances can affect our happiness but ultimately we have the power to control our peace of mind. Mindfulness is a daily act and allows us to live in the now.

Kelly: How can people book a session with you?

Alex: Clients can book via my website Soulful Healing London
