CARDAMOM
The dried ripe fruits of cardamom have been used as a spice and in medicines since the 4th century BC. It was first imported into Europe around 1300 BC whereby herbalists used cardamom as a digestive aid. In Ayurvedic medicine cardamom is used for its detoxifying effect helping the liver remove toxins from the body.
CLOVE
The analgesic, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial effectsof cloves dates back many centuries. Cloves were one of the first spices to be traded and evidence of cloves have been found in vessels dating as far back as 1721 BC and were once a treasured commodity prized by the Ancient Romans.
GINGER
Produced as a tonic root in the Asia for over 5000 years to treat many ailments. It was exported from India to the Roman Empire over 2000 years ago, where it was especially valued for its medicinal properties. Ginger is traditionally used to ease nausea and vomiting.
LIQUORICE ROOT
Known to the ancient Greeks to treat asthma, dry cough, and all diseases of the lungs. It is mentioned throughout each dynasty in Chinese history and was cultivated in Europe and England by the end of the sixteenth century.
SCHISANDRA
Used for thousands of years as a tonic and an anti-aging substance. In China it is believed that the berry contains all three primary life energies: Jing, Qi and Shen, restoring vitality and extending life.
Funfact:
Shisandra has five distinct flavours found in the berry. Each flavour corresponds to the five Elements of Traditional Chinese Medicine: Sour (Wood), Bitter (Fire), Sweet (Earth), Acrid (Metal) and Salty (Water). Hence its name in Chinese "Wu Wei Zi" which means five (wu) flavor (wei) seed/berry (zi).
